The winner of the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at Europe’s most prestigious film festival will be shown during the Croatian Cinema Night at the Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings on June 28
From June 27 to 29, the Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings will present some of the finest works from the regional and international film scene. A highlight of the event will be the screening of this year’s Palme d’Or winner for Best Short Film from the Cannes Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in Europe.
Directed by Nebojša Slijepčević, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent is based on a horrific crime that occurred during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina 30 years ago. The film tells the story from the perspective of witnesses, a group often overlooked but crucial to every crime. Although the fourteen-minute film, starring Goran Bogdan, is set during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, its theme remains relevant, says Danijel Pek, the film’s producer, as the main protagonist asks himself the question we all face daily: Should we intervene when we witness violence if it is not aimed directly at us?
“I am thrilled about our first appearance at Ponta Lopud, where we will enjoy the unique atmosphere of this Elaphiti island in the company of the audience, esteemed colleagues, and young filmmakers.” ‘The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent’ will be screened during the Croatian Cinema Night for the Lopud and Dubrovnik audiences. During the daytime, there will be educational workshops with young filmmakers to discuss the art of filmmaking, the films we watch, and the challenges faced in the filmmaking process,” said Danijel Pek, the film’s producer from the Antitalent production company, who will present the film to the Lopud audience. He also emphasized that “such interactive workshops bring new values—individual experiences as new inspirations.”
The film will be shown on June 28 during the evening dedicated to Croatian cinema at the La Baja beach, RMH Hotel Lafodia. In addition to The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, the Croatian Cinema Night will feature a screening of The Constitution – A Love Story About Hate (2016) by director Rajko Grlić. Grlić, who will present his film at Ponta Lopud, will also conduct a masterclass and lead an educational workshop on the art and challenges of screenwriting.
“It is an honour and great pleasure to be invited to the Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings, where I will share my experience through various film workshops with top masters of the craft, including those I have collaborated with: Suzana Perić, a music editor of major American films, Tomislav Pavlic, Croatia’s most renowned film editor, and Danijel Pek, a producer who just won the Palme d’Or at Cannes,” Grlić concluded.
