The three-day program concluded with a screening of Barbie, featuring four film screenings, six masterclass lectures, and countless positive impressions from the audience and participants.
Last night’s screening of Barbie marked the end of the Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings, the first of three cultural and artistic summer events organized by Ponta Lopud. Over the three-day event, four evening screenings attracted several hundred visitors, while around twenty participants, young and talented film students, returned home enriched by the knowledge gained from six masterclasses led by esteemed and award-winning filmmakers from the region and around the world.
The screening of Barbie (2023), directed by Greta Gerwig, was introduced by the celebrated Croatian-American music editor, member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Oscar jury member, Suzana Perić, who also worked on the film’s music. “In today’s world, we all strive for perfection. For generations of girls, Barbie represented that perfection in an imaginary world, yet if her shape and characteristics were human, she wouldn’t even be able to stand on the ground. With this film, Greta wanted to convey the message that you are the most beautiful when you are yourself and how you want to be, not pressured to seek something you think you should be or what others expect of you,” said Suzana Perić.

The daytime program for participants featured two masterclass lectures. The one entitled Screenwriting and How to Write It was conducted by the award-winning Croatian director and screenwriter Rajko Grlić, who used his successful film The Constitution (2016), viewed the previous evening, to illustrate the evolution of the script from its inception to the final version and the challenges an author must overcome to realize their vision. The second workshop of the day, on film editing through images and notes, was led by five-time Golden Arena winner Tomislav Pavlic, whose films and series have won awards at festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Sarajevo, Tallinn, Moscow, Toronto, and many others, along with Suzana Perić, who held her second masterclass for participants during the three-day program.
This year’s most prominent lecturers at the Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings continued the tradition of planting a palm tree in the Đorđić-Mayneri Park. The names Rajko Grlić, Suzana Perić, and Nebojša Slijepčević have now become a part of Lopud, serving as a permanent reminder of the knowledge they imparted to future generations and the unforgettable moments they shared with all visitors during these three festival days.

The island’s cuisine once again left no one indifferent. Lopud’s restaurants, with their specialties, enhanced the experience for all participants and lecturers. A special impression was made by the wine tasting from the Saints Hills winery, led by the esteemed sommelier Mira Šemić, the first wine academic from the Balkans, and young winemaker Lucia Tolj, held in the unique setting of LOPUD 1483, who we thank again for their collaboration.

“I thank everyone who selflessly contributed to the realization of this event, which develops, enriches, and helps brand Lopud as the island we want it to be. From the help of individuals and the support of Lopud residents, island restaurants, private accommodation renters, transport, and many other services to the kindness of the RMH Lopud Lafodia Hotel, whose beautiful LaBaja beach hosts the screenings. The entire island participates in the realization, which fills our hearts every year, and people gladly return not only to this festival but also to other Ponta Lopud events, the next being the Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival at the end of August,” concluded Tilda Grossel Bogdanović, founder of the Ponta Lopud Creative Platform.
Ponta Lopud Creative Platform hosts and presents three summer culture programs in 2024 and welcomes all art enthusiasts, particularly those passionate about film, music, and literature. The Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings, the first of three events, will celebrate the art of film from June 27 to 29. The second event, the popular Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival, will attract music lovers to the island from August 29 to 31. A new addition to the creative platform is the Ponta Lopud Book Bridge, which will run from September 27 to 29, rounding off the summer events and closing Lopud’s cultural and artistic season.
