Over the course of two days, this vibrant literary event united writers, intellectuals, and literature enthusiasts, fostering opportunities for creative exchange and a shared appreciation of the literary arts.

The inaugural Ponta Lopud Book Bridge, a literary event held on September 27 and 28, turned the picturesque island of Lopud into a centre for literary dialogue. Authors, scholars, critics and book lovers gathered for insightful discussions on contemporary literature and its role in today’s world. The thoughtfully curated program offered participants the chance to form new connections and engage deeply with the power of the written word.

The first edition of the Book Bridge was a resounding success, with Lopud proving itself to be the perfect setting for creative encounters. This new addition to the cultural scene has demonstrated great potential to become a must-attend event for literary enthusiasts and creators alike.

“The name of the event couldn’t be more fitting. The island’s breath-taking beauty, paired with an extraordinary line-up of speakers and a refreshing absence of commercial distractions, ensured that countless bridges were built—bridges connecting readers and writers, nations and cultures, poets, authors, and scholars. Writing, often a solitary endeavour, found a rare opportunity here for shared moments, not just in sessions but around the dinner table, where bonds of community flourished. This sense of togetherness took root swiftly, and many of us will undoubtedly stay connected—perhaps as friends, perhaps as future collaborators,” said author and event participant Cauvery Madhavan.

The program of the event, attended by prominent literary figures from Croatia, the region, Europe and around the world, included a range of engaging author talks, workshops, and panel discussions. These sessions explored contemporary literary trends, the role of literature in the digital age, and its power to promote social awareness. The event successfully fulfilled its mission to bridge diverse literary traditions, enabling writers to share their experiences and challenges while offering the audience a deeper insight into the world of literature, particularly through talks on books, ideas and creative processes. In addition to the rich literary program, Saturday evening featured a musical performance by renowned composer and attendee of The Lopud Foundation Artist Retreat Draško Adžić, enriching the event’s atmosphere and providing visitors with a unique experience that seamlessly blended literature and music.

This event marks another significant cultural addition to Lopud, already known for its film and jazz festivals, which celebrate true art and creativity. Ponta Lopud Creative Platform hosts and presents three summer cultural programs in 2024, welcoming all art lovers, especially those passionate about film, music, and literature. Ponta Lopud Summer Screenings, celebrating the art of film, was the first of three events held from June 27 to 29. The second event, which attracted music lovers to the island from August 29 to 31, is the popular Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival. The third, new addition to the creative platform is the Ponta Lopud Book Bridge, a festival held from September 27 to 29, which rounded off the summer festivities and closed Lopud’s cultural-artistic season.
