In the morning, a masterclass by Joel Coen was held with moderator Pawel Pawlikowski. Six highly successful young directors: Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, Una Gunjak, Tamara Kotevska, Maja Miloš, Dušan Kasalica and Katarina Morano had the opportunity to talk with the two Oscar winners about the process of filmmaking and film art.
The first meeting of the members of the Ponta Lopud Club was held. The Club brings together the friends of the Festival to create an active community that contributes to the long-term quality of art inspired events on the island. Ponta Lopud brings new ideas to life, pushes the creative boundaries of young talents and tells completely new stories that audiences around the world are eagerly awaiting to hear.
Just like last year, Mira Šemić, a distinguished sommelier and wine connoisseur and the first female wine academic in the Balkans, attracted special attention of both participants and guests of the Ponta Lopud Festival. Together with an excellent young winemaker Lucia Tolj, she presented the selected wines of the Saints Hills winery, the wine partner of the Festival: Mala Nevina, St Heels, Sv Roko and Dingač.
At last night’s film program of the Festival, NOMADLAND was shown on the La Baja beach of the RMH Lopud Lafodia Resort & Wellness. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, brought director Chloe Zhao the best film award – the Golden Lion. Its success was crowned with Oscars for Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Director (Chloe Zhao) and Best Picture (Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey, Chloe Zhao, producers).
The audience was greeted by the film’s producer Peter Spears and lead actress Frances McDormand.
“What a wonderful place to watch a movie, you are really lucky! The film you’re about to watch, Nomadland, is a joint project that Peter and I did, but the most deserving person is Chloe Zhao, the woman whose name I saw on the credits of her second film at the Toronto Film Festival. I immediately started researching about her and thanks to her, this film was made.”
“When we read Jessica Bruder’s Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, we immediately wanted to turn it into a film. Chloe Zhao just started working on the screenplay at that time, so we joined forces and made this film together,” said Peter Spears.
The evening ended in the Lopud’s Mandrač restaurant, where guest chef Vesna Miletić from the Zagreb restaurant Tač and host chef Damir Šarić presented their culinary skills to the filmmakers. The menu for the gala dinner included selected dishes prepared from quality local ingredients and guests had the opportunity to enjoy a truly unique gastronomic experience. This event is part of the Ponta Lopud Gourmet program in cooperation with Gault&Millau Croatia, whose top Croatian chefs cook for filmmakers in several restaurants on Lopud.
